Debut Sales of 2016 Gerald R. Ford Presidential $1 Coins

Dollars featuring Gerald Ford, the 38th President of the United States, moved out of the sales gate somewhat slower than the last $1 coin featuring Richard M. Nixon but they ran quicker than other recent issues.

Six products with Ford dollars were released on March 8. Available options include rolls, bags and boxes of circulating-quality coins struck in Philadelphia and Denver with mint marks of ‘P’ and ‘D’. A combined 2,751,325 sold, which is 105,600 less than the prior 2016 dollars for Nixon.

In looking further back for comparisons, last year’s issues logged the following starting sales:

  • 2.86 million for Lyndon B. Johnson dollars;
  • 1.54 million for John F. Kennedy dollars;
  • 2.86 million for Dwight D. Eisenhower dollars; and
  • 1.99 million for Harry S. Truman dollars.

FYI CoinNews readers –

Speaking of U.S. Mint sales decreasing since Jeppson came to the Mint, here is what he said to the Senate committee hearing for him possibly becoming U.S. Mint Director at Tuesday hearing –

“A recent decline in numismatic sales is attributable to a drop in disposable income and a change in customer demographics”

What a bunch of crap! LOL

Thanks for printing these sales lists..they are very appreciated…Mr. Riesling you are absolutely correct in your observation of this incompetent mint director to be…Personally I believe this will be the worst year in sales for the mint

David March 18, 2016 at 8:10 am

Maybe sales would increase if they could keep their products off the “Currently Unavailable” list! Most of the products launched this year have ended up on that list soon after the launch. Back order is one thing, but do they think people are going to keep checking back in so they can order something? Their web site management also leads to a lot of clutter. Having the 2015 Gold Eagles still taking up space after the launch of the 2016s is dumb. I’m a big fan of the mint products and buy a lot but they are slipping in performance.
