2016 Patricia Nixon First Spouse Gold Coins and Cases

Proof and uncirculated 2016 Patricia Nixon First Spouse Gold Coins and their presentation cases

Patricia Nixon First Spouse Gold Coins are new to U.S. Mint sales boards, as are 2016 Presidential $1 Coin Proof Sets.

In posting 6-day sales of 124,420, the set of proof dollars sprang out of the sales gate quicker than any since 2012. This year’s set is $17.95 and marks the last in the product line. The final three Presidential dollars feature Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan.

Pat Nixon gold coins started slower with their higher prices — $815.00 for the proof and $795.00 for the uncirculated. Collectors ordered 1,845 coins in the early going with the proofs at 1,159 and the uncirculated coins at 686. These figures are lower than the immediate prior First Spouse Gold Coins for Lady Bird Johnson. They posted debut sales of 2,220 with splits of 1,287 for the proof and 933 for the uncirculated. Their prices were $50 cheaper.

Just a FYI on the First Lady Patricia “Pat” Nixon $10 gold First Spouse coin: her legal name was Thelma Catherine (Ryan) Nixon! The U.S. Mint doesn’t use legal names for most of these coins, but rather their nicknames which is a shame to the history portrayed by our coinage. I posted the full story on this coin blog website the other day under the 2016 Patricia Nixon gold coin article & my story of meeting Claudia Alta Taylor “Lady Bird” Johnson if anyone is interested.

Happy collecting everyone!

Thanks SETH RIESLING. All the SERIES of the GOLD spouses seem in be in the end run. Amazing that the marketing was so bad.

S. Knight –

You are so right on your comment. I agree that for some strange reason the U.S. Mint didn’t seem to be pleased with having to produce at least 4 new coin designs a year for this gold $10 coin First Spouse series (they had a lot of trouble with some of the selected designs not striking up properly in the dies & it therefore cost them a small fortune in the test strike phase for each coin ( 4 obverse/reverse designs year) plus sales were not great either but they still were forced by legislation to produce & sell them). The Mint basically treated the series as the “little orphan Annie” of all coins they have produced in recent years. Plus the 1/2 oz of .9999 fine gold in each coin times 4 coins a year (8 coins if you wanted both Proof & Unc) kept many collectors out pricewise. It is sad too because most of the reverse designs in particular were great IMHO.
