US Mint Sales: LBJ $1 Coins Debut

Rolls, Bags and Boxes of Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential $1 Coins

More than 2.85 million LBJ $1 coins sold during their first few days of release

Highlights from this week’s U.S. Mint sales report include first showings of the 2015 Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential $1 Coin and several updates on popular, recent product issues.

Dollars featuring LBJ, the 36th President of the United States, moved quicker out of the gate than those for John F. Kennedy. They were about on par with the second issue of the year honoring Dwight D. Eisenhower and faster than the first 2015 dollars honoring Harry S. Truman.

On Aug. 18, six products with Johnson $1 coins went on sale. Available options include rolls, bags and boxes of circulating-quality $1 coins struck in Philadelphia and Denver with mint marks of ‘P’ and ‘D’. More than 2.85 million LBJ $1 coins sold. Here’s a breakdown of their starts by product type:

Opening Sales of LBJ Presidential $1 Coins

Products Price Unit Sales 1s
25-Coin Roll (P) $32.95 29,133 728,325
25-Coin Roll (D) $32.95 27,452 686,300
100-Coin Bags (P) $111.95 685 68,500
100-Coin Bags (D) $111.95 657 65,700
250-Coin Box (P) $275.95 2,202 550,500
250-Coin Box (D) $275.95 3,032 758,000
Total 2,857,325

As a comparison, the immediate prior dollars for JFK opened with sales of nearly 1.6 million. The Ike dollars logged starting sales of over 2.86 million, the quickest pace since the U.S. Mint stopped offering 500-coin boxes of dollars in 2013. The first 2015-dated Presidential dollar, depicting Harry S. Truman, opened with sales of 1.99 million.

Coin & Chronicles Set

The newest Coin & Chronicles Set, honoring Dwight D. Eisenhower, sold out in about 15 minutes when it launched on Aug. 11. It hasn’t been available since that time. Last week’s report had its stats up 10 while the latest report has it down by 9 to 16,821 for 98.9% of the 17,000 maximum.

Last year’s set depicting Franklin D. Roosevelt continues to get a bit of extra love. It went up 494 to 15,321 for 76.6% of its 20,000 maximum. The last eleven weekly gains totaled 729; 174; 111; 89; 152; 132; 201; 146; 69; 65; and 77.

$100 American Liberty

The U.S. Mint continues to log declines for the high-relief 2015 American Liberty Gold Coin. In the last report, its weekly total fell by 356. It went down another 1,081 in this round to 41,330. That’s 82.7% of the allotted 50,000.

I do not understand how the two first spouse, and others, that have been unavailable on the web site for weeks can continue to show sales. Is it possible to buy unavailable items in other places such as the mint stores or from representatives set up at coin shows?

Danny J. Morano August 26, 2015 at 11:32 am

It’s beginning to look more and more like the $100.00 Gold Liberty is a Bust. It should have sold out the first day, with a mintage of only 50,000. I bought 2 and was lucky enough to have both grade as MS70 ER. I am very disappointed to hear the Liberty Dime, the Seated Liberty Quarter and the Stadium Liberty 50 cent piece will be minted as tenth oz., quarter oz. and half oz., instead of 1oz. Like the Buffalo Nickel was. I wonder and hope they’ll mint the Morgan Dollar in 1oz. .9999 Gold in BU, PF and RPF. That is if they do it at all. All the best!

IS that LBJ or the Old Man from Pawn Stars!!! Ugly rendition….woof woof

Dwight August 26, 2015 at 6:25 pm

On ebay current asking prices for the 2015 Eisenhower Coin & Chronicles Set have fallen to Buy It Now from $170 to $175. Compare these reduced asking prices to their first day of release Tuesday August 11, 2015 when ebay seller discountprices815 was able to resell them for $399 each as Item #291537319327. $399 – $57.95 = +$341.05 Windfall Profit.

Mike August 27, 2015 at 4:23 pm

The US mint can kiss my a** will never buy anything from them again after the last coin chronicles went on sale placed my order then they told me it was never placed they had it rigged so only certain people could get them had a friend call in also the lady asked her if she ever bought from the US mint she said no the lady told her they would not sell to her then but of idiots!

Danny J. Morano August 27, 2015 at 4:49 pm

I don’t understand it. These aren’t even gold or silver and yet the Mint treats them like the crown jewels and to part and parcel them and sell them on a whim?
Does someone out there know something we don’t? Are they made of unobtanium? Does Obama have something to do with this fiasco? Or is the mint pissed at all of us who complained
about their glorious $100.00 Liberty and the fact it still isn’t sold out and everybody Is being punished for it. Go figure.

David August 28, 2015 at 2:35 pm

Boz, maybe it is possible the mint is starting to post sales when they bill the credit card (when they ship). Also, there is no way they sold 548 of the proof Lou Hoover coins (a 25% gain). I would expect a negative adjustment on this line next week. Its fun to look at these numbers, but some of them are suspect.

Danny J. Morano August 28, 2015 at 3:07 pm

Dwight,
Just have the mint sell them on Ebay at buy it now.
