US Mint Sales: Dozens of Products Retreat

2015-W Proof American Silver Eagle, Presentation Case and Certificate of Authenticity

2015-W Proof American Silver Eagle weekly sales climbed 8,594 to 412,279

It’s déjà vu. The four same United States Mint products have stood atop sales charts for three straight weeks, matching the number of weeks in which the Mint hasn’t released anything new.

The agency’s three core annual sets and proof American Silver Eagles have been swapping positions in the top four, and that should continue into next week’s sales report. The following one will mix it up, as it’ll include starting sales of John F. Kennedy Presidential $1 Coins and this year’s Annual Uncirculated Dollar Coin Set.

U.S. Mint Weekly Best Sellers

Here’s a listing of the Mint’s top ten products of the week:

  1. 2015 Proof Set (+9,008 to 355,173)
  2. 2015-W Proof Silver Eagle (+8,594 to 412,279)
  3. 2015 Silver Proof Set (+6,936 to 222,100)
  4. 2015 Mint Set (+5,976 to 192,841)
  5. 2015 Presidential $1 Coin Proof Set (+3,977 to 162,254)
  6. 2015 Uncirculated Silver Eagles (+1,650 to 152,131)
  7. 2015 America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set (+1,104 to 68,937)
  8. 2015 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set (+860 to 76,146)
  9. 2014 Kennedy Half-Dollar Silver Coin Collection (+783 to 212,736)
  10. 2015-W $50 American Gold Buffalo Proof Coins (+741 to 11,196)

The U.S. Mint published sales updates to 225 numismatic products. Forty-nine of them outperformed their prior weekly sales compared to 97 previously. Seven products increased by more than 1,000 units versus 8 previously.

Product Sales Moving South

About six times higher than seen in typical weekly sales reports, 41 products had their totals notched lower, and many of them by sizable amounts. Leading decliners included last year’s proof Silver Eagle, dropping 1,581, and most of the First Spouse Gold Coins with combined reductions of 786.

So when the sales go down is that due to returns? Do many people buy more than they want, cherry pick what they receive and then return the rest? I try to order early to avoid getting returned merchandise, but should I be cherry picking also?

I was wondering if the large number of negative sales numbers say in the First Spouse coins due to some type of inventory that takes place at a given time of year? Or are they inventorying due to many of the First Spouse coins approaching sell-outs? Both Ida McKinley (-9) and Edith Roosevelt (-48) uncirculated are both no longer listed on the Mint’s webpage for sale. With a (-48) for Roosevelt if those were return coins will they be relisting. Or was it just the Mint trying to clean up their reported sales numbers due to the approaching sell-out of many of the First Spouse Gold Coins?

Thats a LOT of spouse coin returns. 6-8 weeks worth of sales for some. I’m thinking that would have to be dealers or resellers ditching inventory before the Kennedy coin comes out in a couple weeks. Seriously doubt 5% of Edith Wilson proof collectors decided (and were eligible) to return coins all on the same week and the sales of all those were strong ~8 weeks ago. What’s the time frame on the Mint’s return policy?? OK, I looked. 7 days! Hows that work, they didn’t sell 129 Edith Wilson proofs in the past 7 WEEKS. Your bookkeeping clean up might be right. Does that get filed under, “here’s a few hundred 1/2 oz gold coins that thought we sold, but apparently didn’t”???

I think its obvious that the mint doesn’t know what’s going on sometimes. It would seem like they should hirer a few old time coin collectors that are slightly OCD about numbers to get a better handle on things. Sometimes the rapid sell outs and the plain wrong choice in production amounts just make no sense at all. Its like the upcoming Chronicle set with a mintage of only 17,000 but with a reverse proof dollar in it. I bet most collectors would recommend a mintage of 50,000 instead. But they will have a rapid sell out and then those collectors shut out will not want to but the other 3 later this year.
Going back to the lower numbers, I bet they only balance the books on returns manually and they are doing it now to get ready to close out the products.

The Native American 2014 250 coin boxes are sold out. This means a 1529 box ($382,250) discrepancy in inventory just disappeared?

David June 15, 2015 at 7:28 am

Gene, actually going back a week the numbers for that product jumped by the same amount, so they are just correcting a data entry mistake.
