Ken Conaway, a U.S. ingot collector from Ohio, won a Mint State 1907 $20 High Relief Double Eagle as the Grand Prize in Heritage Auctions’ annual numismatic survey.

Around seven years ago, Conaway started collecting U.S. Government silver ingots. Today, his collection rivals any ever assembled privately, according to Heritage. Conaway attributes much of his research and collection success to Heritage Auctions and the company’s archives available on HA.com.

"Being able to look back to the early 2000s and study each of the ingots sold by Heritage Auctions in the last great collection — that of Alan Bingel — is absolutely priceless," Conaway said.

1907 High Relief Double Eagles are highly sought rarities. Many collectors consider them the most attractive American coins ever minted. Conaway’s double eagle, certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation as MS60 Wire Rim, is valued at about $12,500.

Other top prizes awarded in Heritage Auctions’ annual numismatic survey include:

  • First place, five winners may auction up to $100,000 at 0% sellers commission.

  • Second place, 10 winners may auction up to $50,000 at 0% sellers commission.

  • Third place, 10 winners may have a Heritage Auctions’ representative review their collection, give professional current market evaluation and have up to 30 coins certified by PCGS or NGC at Heritage’s expense.

Heritage is the largest auction house founded in the U.S. and the world’s third largest, with annual sales of more than $900 million. For more information, visit available on HA.com.

Editor’s Update: This article was changed to correct Mr. Conaway’s first name to Ken.
