This new coin, titled the Doctor Who – Twelfth Doctor 2015 1/2 oz Silver Proof Coin, is struck from 99.9% pure silver and has a limited mintage of 4,000.

"Doctor Who is currently the longest running and most successful science fiction television series of all time," describes the Perth Mint. "Produced in Great Britain by the BBC, the program depicts the adventures of a time travelling, humanoid alien known as the Doctor. This coin set has been developed in collaboration between BBC Worldwide Australia & New Zealand and New Zealand Mint."

Since its debut in 1963, the science fiction series has seen twelve different people portray the Doctor. Included actors, in the order of their appearance, are William Hartnell (1963-1966), Patrick Troughton (1966-1969), Jon Pertwee (1970-1974), Tom Baker (1974-1981), Peter Davison (1981-1984), Colin Baker (1984-1986), Sylvester McCoy (1987-1996), Paul McGann (1996), Christopher Eccleston (2005), David Tennant (2005-2010), Matt Smith (2010-2013) and Peter Capaldi (2013-present).

Released by the Perth Mint in October 2013, the first eleven Doctors are portrayed individually in the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary 1/2 oz Silver Proof Eleven-Coin Set.

Such an awful lot of money for a non-circulating coin produced solely for the collectors market. Couldn’t they achieve the same profits for the Niue people by making the coin more broadly available at a price everyday collectors could afford? $55.44 x 4000 coins = $221,760 gross revenue. $10 x 22,000 coins – $220,000 coins and maybe expands the market for Niue coins.Silver, cupro-nickel, whatever.
