Sales of the collectible 2014-P Great Sand Dunes National Park Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin kicked off significantly slower than the prior four 2014-dated America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins.
Its sales debut was weakened in an environment of plummeting silver prices and the end of a 10% discount — items we discussed when the Everglades coin launched on Nov. 6.
From its release on Thursday through to Sunday, the coin logged sales of 16,243. The immediate previous issue commemorating Great Sand Dunes National Park opened with higher sales of 20,047.
As another comparison, and although not apples-to-apples it does highlight some price sensitivity for buyers, the bullion version of the Everglades coin debuted with first-day sales of 22,000 while the bullion Great Sand Dunes coin with 11 weeks of sales is lower at 16,800. Bullion coins sell at a few percentage points above their spot value whereas the collectible coins at $154.95 feel more expensive with silver prices tracking at more than four-and-a-half year lows.
The following table shows how starting sales of the Everglades silver coin compared with starts of other collectibles in the series since 2012:
