It does not seem very efficient to continue marketing low-selling products for months and years. The stocking of items that just sit in vaults or cabinets must take up tremendous amounts of space, adding to the contractual overhead the mint must pay in its deals with Pitney Bowes and the other fulfillment vendors.

Interesting for the collector though is trying to second guess the off chance that production may be cut back and/or sales abruptly cut off. We’ve had some such surprises in the past.

But what’s with the on again off again. A ploy to pump up sales on a slow mover? Or did somebody discover a hidden hoard in some dusty back room?

Boz, I don’t know if the Mint is clever enough to think of a marketing strategy. I’m inclined to think it was (another) error.

It reminds me of the Braille coins fiasco. That’s one coin that I lost money on. And I’m thinking that the US mint never marketed these to people that can’t see. Big mistake.
