New from the Royal Canadian Mint is its 2014 $50 Snowy Owl Silver Coin, the second in a new program of 99.99% pure silver coins that sell at their legal tender face value of $50.

The series kicked off in April when the Mint introduced its 2014 $50 Polar Bear Silver Coin for $50. Mint stats show 74% of the available 100,000 have sold. The mintage cap for this latest release is 10,000 lower at 90,000.

Almost two dozen silver coins priced at face value have been released by the Royal Canadian Mint. These coins include 13 issued $20 for $20 silver coins; 4 issued $100 for $100 silver coins; and a just released $200 for $200 silver coin. All but the most recent ones have sold out. The coins have proven very popular with their prices, precious metal content and bold designs credited for a swell of new Royal Canadian Mint customers.

Designs, Specifications and Mintages

2014 $50 Snowy Owl Silver Coins feature Trevor Tennant’s design depicting a Snowy Owl in flight with a Canadian arctic environment in the background. Below the imagery are inscriptions of CANADA, 50 DOLLARS and the year 2014. Obverses offer Susanna Blunt’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II with inscriptions of ELIZABETH II and D.G. REGINA.

Specifications of the $50 for $50 coins include a weight of 15.87 grams, a diameter of 34 mm, a matte proof finish and a serrated edge. With its 99.99% purity, the Snowy Owl coin has a silver weight of just above one-half troy ounces (0.51023 oz).
