In-person purchases of the dual-dated 1964-2014 Proof Gold Kennedy Half-Dollar will be limited to those who are 18 and older, the United States Mint said in a brief memo sent to news media on Monday.

Collectors will have the opportunity to order the unique halves beginning on Aug. 5, 2014. Ordering on the 5th opens at:

  • the U.S. Mint website at www.usmint.gov/catalog
  • the U.S. Mint call center number 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468)
  • two sales points at the upcoming American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money
  • sales counters at the U.S. Mint Headquarters in Washington, D.C. and at U.S. Mint production facilities in Philadelphia and Denver

Online and phone orders are limited to 5 coins per household whereas in-person orders at the ANA show and U.S. Mint shops are restricted to 2 coins.

Here’s the full text of the Mint’s memo:

50th Anniversary Kennedy Half-Dollar Gold Proof Coin at the American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money Aug. 5-9, 2014, and at all Mint over-the-counter points of sale will be restricted to those individuals 18 years of age or older. Proof of age may be required at the time of purchase.

The Mint this year is producing 7 unique coins within 3 products to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy half-dollar. Last week, the U.S. Mint announced sales plans for the products that included early inventory levels and how they will be sold at the ANA convention.

What are we looking at price-wise? $1250 ea?

Mike Unser

Jack, if the London gold Fix weekly average stays within $1,300.00 to $1,349.99, the coin will be $1,277.50. For every $50 price range change, the price will adjust lower or higher by $37.50.

Yahoo! Keep the whipper snappers home. No stocking up, using chilluns to do your bidding. 🙂

Jack

$2190 presale on EBAY already. How modest! LOL

Jp

How many will they produce? That is what will drive the value of these coins.

Jack

Initially 40,000 from I’m seeing. Mintage and interest together are my thoughts that drive the value. A great example is the mint produced the same amount of DAV coins as HOF coins. The HOF coins are selling for twice as much on the secondary market.

Jp

I agree. If only we knew for sure just how many of these gold coins they will produce. I believe they will sell 40,000 with no problem. But the value will lie in a lower total mintage number. I believe the Mint should commit to a number now.

Victor DeCurtis

This will be an historic minting. Those of U.S., over 18, know and remember that day, as if it was, yesterday. Just having a set of these coins, for myself, is a milestone in itself. 40,000, 140,000 who cares, except the speculators? Besides, if you have the money to afford one gold half, get it, put it away and teach your grandchildren, about the man.

Brian

I sure hope the Mint doesn’t pull a fast one on this coin like they just did to me on the BB HOF gold. I had an actual order # for almost 4 months saying in stock and reserved, and today my coin is no longer available!!!!! They even sent me my free bag months ago and now no coin!! The supervisor told me I was on a waiting list. The Mint is getting worse and worse.

Jack

The same thing happened to me Brian. They even e-mailed me the other day with a promised ship date. Supervisor told me I was on a waiting list but my order page CLEARLY said In Stock and Reserved!

Mike,
Will the On-Line and Phone orders begin at 12:00 noon EST on Aug 5th?

SactoMike

Victor and Brian – agreed that the Mint should commit to a number. But they might split the difference and opt for something like a 4-week ordering window (similar to the Silver Eagle 25th Anniversary, and other issues). Personally, I’m not a fan of ordering windows..kind of takes a segment of the excitement out of it. 50,000 for the gold and 100,000 of the silver sets would be appropriate, imho. But remember, we’re dealing with the world’s largest coin dealer, the U.S. Mint! In any case, you two and the rest of this forum has convinced me to buy one… Read more »

Brian, They refunded me for all the free bags that they charged me $4.95 for. I’m thinking they must have received many complaints. After nearly 4 months the mint couldn’t determine if they had enough to send me?!?!?! Hopefully the Kennedy thing goes smoother.

RonnieBGood

I had the same thing happen. I just received an e-mail 2 days ago with a ship date of Aug 1 for the Proof and Unc Gold HOF coins. Today my order is no longer available. I sure hope the new order system the Mint is investing in will be worth the money WE are spending on it!

WildBillCoins

I talked with the mint yesterday and there is 40,000 coins that are already minted and ready to go. There is no limit on these coins. They are going to take orders and fill them like they did on the 2013 Gold reverse proof buffalo. Probably a month to order the Gold Kennedy 3/4 ounce coin. My baseball coins were also cancelled. I did end up buying them on ebay graded in MS70 and Proof 70 early release for $1000 a coin. It is what it is. I will see everyone at the ANA World fair of money! Happy collecting… Read more »

I made several calls to the mint and was assured that my HOF gold coins would be available. I had 3 orders in. So far I received part of 1 order and now the other 2 orders were cancelled. Mine also said in stock and reserved with specific ship dates that kept changing. I also had my money refunded on the Mint bags (thank God). Obviously the Mint grossly over promised coin orders. I see so many dealers on EBAY selling large amounts of these coins. Several are selling (lots) of 40 and 50 and that is after they have… Read more »

RonnieBGood, All indications are that phone and online ordering will open at 12:00 noon EST on Aug. 5. My brother Darrin and I visited the West Point Mint this week, returning late last night. The gold Kennedy halves look impressive, as does the silver reverse proof they are also producing. We’ll get some photos of the coins published soon.

Jack

Got my uncirculated sets order placed by 12:15. 5 for me, 5 for my brother, 5 for my dog!

Victor DeCurtis

Jack, how did you manage that? I tried ordering 11 sets and I was told that 5 was the limit. I got my five ordered. I think I’ll have my daughters and my wife’s daughter order five each.

dale

i got my 5 sets at 12 12 pm ship date 7/28/14

Jack

Victor, had to send them to different addresses at 5 each. Mother and brother helped out. Just kidding about the dog! I think the initial 37,000 will be gone by the end of the day. Hope they don’t mint much more. No more would be even better. Happy collecting!

Jack

Looks like shipping is now 9/6/14 on the half dollars that went on sale today. I think initial supply will be exhausted today. Now it looks as though the gold Kennedy’s are even more than 3/4 ounce. No commitment on the price yet from the mint.

dale

ship date for my order is 7/28/14 5 coins entered waiting room 1145 purchased 1212 pm will see,,,,

dale

The U.S. Mint reported this morning that the clad set notched first day sales of 68,974. Later today we’ll publish an article that shows some photos of the gold halves that were taken during our visit at West Point.
