2013-W Proof American Platinum Eagle coins are no longer available. As briefly discussed in our weekly sales article published on Wednesday, the U.S. Mint declared the proof platinum coin sold out. Its latest sales total of 5,758 is at the second lowest mintage for size in proof quality, as highlighted in the table further below.
Last year’s proof Platinum Eagle was released on July 18, 2013 at an opening price of $1,800. Its pricing changed several times over the months as the market value of platinum fluctuated, but it rounded back to $1,800 and that’s the level where it sold out. Its mintage limit back then was announced at 15,000, sharply higher than where sales stand now.
American Platinum Eagle coins have been issued since 1997, starting in proof and bullion versions and in sizes of 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz. The U.S. Mint ended sales of the bullion coins in 2009 while the proof continued but just in the 1 oz size.
2009 was also the year that kicked off the Preamble series designs which explores the core concepts of American democracy by highlighting the Preamble of the U.S. Constitution. Each year a different reverse theme is featured on the coin that examines the six principles of the Preamble. The themed design for 2013 commemorates the principle, "To Promote the General Welfare."

This year’s 2014-W Proof Platinum Eagle is scheduled with the release month of July. Its theme, the last in the Preamble series, is: "To Secure the Blessings of Liberty to Ourselves and our Posterity."
Also of note, after a 5-year hiatus, the bullion 2014 Platinum Eagle launched on Monday and scored opening sales of 8,500.
