Quarters honoring Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited National Park in the United States, jumped onto U.S. Mint sales charts this week.
Six numismatic products with Great Smoky Mountains quarters debuted on Monday, Jan. 27, 2014. Available options for the first of the five 2014 America the Beautiful Quarters include rolls and bags of circulating-quality coins produced from Denver, Philadelphia and San Francisco with corresponding mint marks of ‘D’, ‘P’, and ‘S’.
Unit sales concentrated across the products just like prior Mount Rushmore quarters. In totals for the newest coins, two-roll sets of P and D quarters led with unit sales 8,197. Next at 6,413 were three-roll sets of D, P and S quarters. Single rolls and bags of S quarters followed with sales of 2,994 and 2,607. Lastly, quarters in P and D bags logged sales of 1,910 and 1,897. The total number of Great Smoky Mountains quarters sold in the first few days reached 2,186,480, which is a bit lower than Mount Rushmore quarters start of 2,267,000.
The new coins were top sellers for the Mint, though they couldn’t compete with the 2014-W Proof Silver Eagle during its first full week of availability.

This week’s U.S. Mint sales report includes 184 numismatic products. Setting aside products that just debuted, 78 outperformed their prior weekly sales compared to 58 in the last report. Many of them were older America the Beautiful Quarter products — most of last year’s quarter rolls and bags improved and sales jumped for all America the Beautiful Quarters Three-Coin Sets.
Finally and as shown in the tables further below, there were some adjustments to the recently sold out 2013 Proof American Gold Eagles. The one-quarter once and one-half ounce sizes still maintained their low mintage titles. This coin news article offers an updated breakdown on what coins in the Gold Eagle series are most scarce.
