Preparations for the new year are in full swing at the United States Mint. As proof of that matter, design candidates for the 2014-W Proof American Platinum Eagle have been unveiled.

Shown here are twelve design candidates for the reverse side of the 2014 American Platinum Eagle (see the larger images below)

The 2014 American Platinum Eagle will mark the end of a six-year series dedicated to the six principles found in the preamble of the U. S. Constitution. For 2014, the chosen theme for the reverse of the coin is "To Secure the Blessings of Liberty to Ourselves and our Posterity."

Twelve design candidates for the Blessings of Liberty reverse image have been shared with the public. These twelve candidates will now undergo review before a final selection is made.

As part of that review process, both the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) and the United States Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) will scrutinize the designs and give comments and recommendations. This is standard procedure for new coin and medal designs.

According to the published CFA agenda, their review of the designs will take place today, Nov. 21, 2013. The review date for the CCAC has not been published.

Once these two bodies compete their reviews, their recommendations will be submitted to the Secretary of the Treasury along with the recommendations of U.S. Mint officials. The final design will be chosen by the Secretary and ultimately unveiled to the public before the coin is issued next year.

American Platinum Eagles debuted in 1997 and have featured annually changing reverse images. The preamble of the U.S. Constitution sub-series first appeared in 2009 and is based on narratives prepared by the Chief Justice of the United States at the request of the United States Mint.

The six-year preamble Platinum Eagle series themes include:

2009 – To Form a More Perfect Union
2010 – To Establish Justice
2011 – To Insure Domestic Tranquility
2012 – To Provide for the Common Defense
2013 – To Promote the General Welfare
2014 – To Secure the Blessings of Liberty to Ourselves and our Posterity

Lady Liberty has been shown on the obverse of the Platinum American Eagles since their start. The image was designed and sculpted by former United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver John Mercanti.

No:8 is a WONDERFUL design.

It looks like they may go with 12, quite unfortunate.

@ Mr. Unser,

Has any decision been made as to which design was chosen for this years release?

Tyrone w

I like 11, its almost like a precursor to the walking liberty design. None of the others really compare imo.
