This strike will be joined by four more to complete the Great Lakes series of 99.99% pure silver coins. The others will feature Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

"The Mint is proud to celebrate Canada’s people, places and passions, including the Great Lakes, which have shaped our collective identity in so many ways," said Ian E. Bennett, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint.

"Lake Superior has captured the imagination of generations and this coin will continue to foster the amazement and delight of Canadians and collectors alike for years to come."

Noting their prominence, the website of the Royal Canadian Mint points out that the Great Lakes are visible from the moon, hold about 20% of the world’s freshwater supply and have more than 150 fish and 50 plant species.

Lake Superior Silver Coin Designs and Specifications

New treatment is used to create the design appearing on reverses of the 2014 Lake Superior Silver Coin. The image features raised land surrounding a translucent blue enamel filled lake. The enameled area is an interpretation of a bathymetric map of Lake Superior.

Susanna Blunt’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is shown on the obverse with the inscriptions of ELIZABETH I and D G REGINA.
