Better sales gains appeared through some of the more popular numismatic products from the United States Mint, including all the proof American Gold Eagles, but the overall picture was weaker.
Those watching sales of the America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Coins should note the 168 trimming of the 2013-P White Mountain Silver Uncirculated Coin that sold out last week. With cancellations and returns likely playing a major part in the reduction, its sales moved down to 20,523.
As discussed earlier this week, the total is still the highest of the five ounce uncirculated coins since 2012. The other 2013-dated coins are currently hovering near the 16,300 level. Below is a breakdown of sales for the bullion and uncirculated five ounce pieces since 2012. Figures with an asterisk (*) represent coins that are no longer available.

Back to the bigger picture, sales volume among numismatic products overall was the weakest it has been in many months. Just 4 products logged unit sales of more than 1,000. That compares to the 6 noted in the last sales report.

This week’s report included updates to 202 numismatic products. Thirty-nine of them outscored their prior weekly sales compared to 54 previously.
Stronger Upcoming Sales
There should be a sharp rise in figures beginning in next week’s sales report. Three events will contribute to increases:
- Woodrow Wilson $1 products launch tomorrow, Oct 17. They are the first new coin products from the Mint in a month.
- Prices were reduced today on all numismatic gold coins and products, making them more attractive based on current gold prices.
- This week the Mint’s 2013 Holiday Catalog is arriving in many collectors’ mailbox.
Likely the biggest of the three, the marketing catalog will trigger stronger sales in products like annual sets and Silver Eagles since they are traditional Christmas gifts in many collectors’ homes.

The maximum mintages don’t really mean anything for the 5 oz coins anymore. It kind of messes up planning with those things as you don’t know when they are going to end them. Last year they did this and Hawaii ended quickly and I went out and bought Chaco, worried I wouldn’t get it and then they lowered the price. They aren’t really helping collectors out with these.
2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the first releases of the Walking Liberty Half – whose obverse is also used on the Silver Eagle – and the Mercury Dime.
Both coins were designed by Aldoph Weinman.
Is now the time for the US Mint to begin planning its 2016 releases? How could we suggest to the Mint to consider some special releases – perhaps a 2016 1/2-oz Silver Eagle that bears the reverse of the Walking Liberty Half, and a 1/10-oz 2016 Mercury Dime…just throwing an idea out there.
