US Mint Sales: Proof Sets and Bullion Coins Quicken

2013 American Eagle Bullion Coins

Demand increased for annual US Mint proof sets and for bullion coins

Proof sets took center stage in the latest United States Mint sales report, grabbing the baton from numismatic gold and silver coins which surged with broad gains in the prior report.

Numismatic precious metal coins weren’t thrown overboard. There were a fair number of them with stronger sales. And actually on the bullion side, demand climbed sharply for gold and silver versions. (Jump down further to read about their sales.)

But on the numismatic front, eyes turned to wider-ranged proof set increases. Shining the brightest was the clad 2013 Proof Set with sales hurdling over 500,000. It took them a few days shy of five months to reach the milestone.

A 100,000 per month average is impressive, more so if it can be maintained. Still, the pace is a tad slower than last year’s clad Proof Set which hit 534,688 in sales during the same stretch of time. Those are commanding a premium these days after selling out in January at 789,782, the lowest total since the set from 1956.

Like last year’s set at its almost five-month sales point and in the midst of the dog days of summer, 2013 Proof Sets were the Mint’s second most ordered product of the week. Also like last year, they fell behind proof Silver Eagles.

This week’s U.S. Mint sales report included updates to 193 products. Sixty-eight of them outperformed their prior weekly sales versus the 61 noted last time. Seven logged unit increases of more than 1,000 compared to 9 previously. No new products launched last week to help bump numbers higher.

Next week’s sales report will show more activity as it’ll include Fort McHenry products — this past Monday’s release of bag and rolls of Fort McHenry quarters and tomorrow’s launch of the 2013-P Fort McHenry Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin.

US Mint Sales: Silver Bullion Coins and Gold Bullion Coins

Bullion sales over the last seven days were the strongest of the month. For American Gold Eagles, the improvements come after several weeks of diminished demand. For American Silver Eagles, sales advanced upon already exceptional levels with the coins on Monday topping 33 million for the year. Before then, October 1 was the soonest the mark had been reached. That happened in 2011 when annual Silver Eagle sales stopped at a record of 39,868,500. This year the bullion coins are on track to top 49 million in sales.

The following grid offers weekly and monthly sales for all U.S. Mint bullion products. The weekly period covers sales from August 22 to August 28, 2013.

Hi George, Got your ears on?
Even though Gold Spot prices have come down a bit today it is still solidly above $1400 an ounce. Watch for the price to spike when the need to raise the US Debt ceiling will again need to be done by this October! If you wish to sell your Lucy Spouse coin, Sept and Oct will be a good time as turmoil in the Middle East and US Debt talks will again spook investors and Gold will shine brightly!

However, It is not a bad idea to have a little Gold and Silver set aside. Watch this short 5 min video on US Debt and it gives you a better idea of why most keep a little bit precious metal in their portfolio’s:

thanks Ronnie….i’l keep an eye out for sure. I do have Mary Todd Lincoln on the auction block, and it’s almost to 1-grand. Hopefully it’ll surpass that.
