Silver and gold edged higher Thursday. American Eagle and Buffalo coins also advanced.

Thursday turned into another day of narrowed changes for gold and silver, each rising less than 0.1%. Palladium was an outlier in precious metals, soaring 2.6%.

Gold for April delivery climbed 20 cents to settle at $1,575.10 an ounce on the Comex in New York. The settlement hugged the day’s low of $1,574.00 an ounce. Gold reached an intraday high of $1,584.90.

"Gold is stuck in the same range it’s traded in for the best part of a fortnight," MarketWatch quoted Ben Traynor, chief economist at BullionVault. He added that with data on U.S. nonfarm payrolls due Friday, "many traders are wary of taking aggressive positions, which has helped keep gold range bound."

Silver inched up for its fifth straight session increase. Silver for May delivery added a half penny to finish at $28.808 an ounce. Prices went as low as $28.74 and as high as $29.085.

In PGM futures Thursday:

  • April platinum gained $15.30, or 1.0%, to $1,595.10 an ounce, trading between $1,585.00 and $1,601.20.

  • Palladium for June delivery rallied $19.00 to $759.05 an ounce, trading between $744.00 and $761.55.
