The Cardinal Collection Crosses Block Jan. 24 in Americana Sale

On January 24, 2013 in New York City, Stack’s Bowers Galleries will auction The Cardinal Collection, one of the most significant U.S. coin collections ever assembled.

The Cardinal Collection features some of the rarest and most expensive United States coins of any denomination, type or date struck during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Highlights of the Stack’s Bowers New York Americana Sale Rarities Night include two of the most famous silver coin rarities from the earliest years of the U.S. Mint and several coins expected to fetch more than one million dollars.

1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar

Graded Specimen 66 (PCGS) CAC, this 1794 silver dollar is the ultimate showpiece in The Cardinal Collection. It is expected to fetch several million dollars when it crosses the block.

It is the finest known specimen of the first United States silver dollar, and is believed to be the very first example struck of only 1,758 released by the United States Mint. Lot 13094.

1792 Half Disme

Graded MS-68 (NGC), this 1782 half disme is the single known example of the first federal coin of any kind. It is one of 1,500 struck in July 1792 using silver believed to have been personally supplied by George Washington.

The pedigree of this incredible coin extends directly back to David Rittenhouse, the first director of the United States Mint. Lot 13093.

The sale will be held in the heart of Manhattan at the firms office located at 110 West 57th Street. The Rarities Night and Cardinal Collection events will be held at the neighboring Le Parker Meridien Hotel.
