2012 Silver Proof Set and Clad 2012 Proof Set Sell Out

6

This week the United States Mint called sellouts for the clad 2012 Proof Set and the 2012 Silver Proof Set. Both sets moved to the "No Longer Available" section of the U.S. Mint’s website and have the words "Sold Out" placed beside them.

US Mint 2012 Silver Proof Set and Clad 2012 Proof Set
Sell outs have been called for the U.S. Mint 2012 Silver Proof Set and clad 2012 Proof Set

Based on latest available sales figures as of Dec. 31, 2012, the silver set at 393,757 has the lowest sales total since the set of 90% silver coins debuted in 1992. The clad set at 789,782 has the lowest sales total since the set from 1956.

Coin News Update: The final sales totals were updated to 395,443 for the 2013 Silver Proof Set and 794,002 for the clad 2013 Proof Set.

There sellouts are a surprise in the sense that their sales windows were shorter than in previous years. The clad 2012 Proof Set debuted on May 7, 2012 at $31.95 while the 2012 Silver Proof Set launched on June 4, 2012 at $67.95. Flash back to the previous year and both sets debuted at the same prices but in January 2011, and then their last day of sale was pre-announced by the U.S. Mint and that happened only on Monday, Dec. 31, 2012.

Demand has retreated in recent years for these core annual sets, as is clear from glancing through the following two tables that offer the latest U.S. Mint sales figures for recent year issues.

Coins in Clad 2012 Proof Set and 2012 Silver Proof Set

Each of the sets has the same denominated coins and each proof coin comes from the U.S. Mint facility in San Francisco with a denoting "S" mint mark. Broken out, both sets contain:

  • (1) 2012-S Kennedy half-dollar
  • (5) 2012-S America the Beautiful Quarters featuring El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico, Chaco Culture National Historical Park in New Mexico, Acadia National Park in Maine, Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii, and Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska
  • (1) 2012-S Roosevelt dime
  • (4) 2012-S Presidential Dollars that honor Chester Arthur, Grover Cleveland (twice), and Benjamin Harrison
  • (1) 2012-S Native American $1 Coin whose reverse is emblematic of Trade Routes in the 17th Century
  • (1) 2012-S Jefferson nickel

The Silver Proof Set differs from the clad Proof Set in that all the America the Beautiful Quarters, the Roosevelt dime and the Kennedy half-dollar are in 90% silver with the remaining balance copper.

Nice, I wonder how low the mintage 2013 sets will go?

Glad I bought the S quarter rolls as well. Have you seen the prices on ebay for the El Yunque? Around $70 for the 40 coin roll!

Im still wavering about buying a limited ed 2012 silver set. Anyone else get one yet?

annie

it will keep lower and lower every year. cause the young generation were after computer games, i phone, i pad, i t.v. for this year. for coin collectors. it’s getting older and older based on age. and it’s getting fewer and fewer coin collectors nowadays.

bill

How about an apple iCoin then lol

Doing what they should have been doing all along – stop sales at the end of the issue year. None of this selling 2011 coin sets in 2012 or 2012 coin sets in 2013. Move on with the new stuff and stop living in the past. Another Dep Dir Peterson management screwup.

Nice pop on the silver proof sets on EBAY after the anouncement! I was considering the Special Edition set myself. It looks like there’s only less than 15K of these sets avalible.

bill

anyone notice the 3 ROLL set on sale 1/28 at the mint with the price TBD?

cool 🙂 i wonder if you will get a discount, buying them all at once or pay more for the “rare” packaging?

status = leaning towards not buying the special silver proof set. still could go either way tho, i haven’t started drinking and thinking yet lol
