US Mint Sales Perk Up for 2012 Commemorative Coins

2012 Commemorative Coins and September 11 National Medals
Sales improved for most 2012 Commemorative Coins and the September 11 National Medals

Several U.S. Mint commemorative coins and the September 11 National Medals logged higher sales as their ordering deadline approached, but there was not a lot of excitement elsewhere in the Mint’s weekly sales report. Most collectors are already looking at 2012 through the rear-view mirror.

Sales ended Monday, Dec. 17, for the 2012-dated commemorative coins and for the 2011-dated September 11 National Medals. The following table offers what could be their final reported sales figures. Products shown in blue are those that posted week-over-week improvements.

Debut Sales for Harrison Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set

Debut sales reached 1,111 for the Benjamin and Caroline Harrison Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Set. The sales figure accounts for orders between its release on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012 and Monday, Dec. 17.

The U.S. Mint is yet to report how well the first term Grover and Frances Cleveland set is doing, having launched back on Nov. 20. The second term Grover and Frances Cleveland set debuted today at noon.

Overall, Presidential $1 Coin & First Spouse Medal Sets since 2011 have struggled to reach individual sales of 6,500.

As for U.S. Mint top weekly sellers, the list is mostly limited to major annual sets.

The mintage for the 2012 SSB $5 unc didn’t rise too much the last week. As a result it is the 2nd lowest minted $5 uncirculated gold coin by 2. The 2001 Capital Visitor coin had a reported mintage of 6761. I’m not seeing many raw ones on Ebay.

The Mint no longer is selling the Commemoratives. It will be interesting to see the final sales count of the SSB Uncirculated. As Homer mentioned, the latest report shows that it had sold 2 less than the 2001 Capitol Visitor. On Ebay, someone is asking $3,500+ for that coin in MS70. I’m glad I have mine, although it’s raw. I hate to think I must sent to NGC to increase it’s value. Funny thing is, I purchased it during the Early Releases time frame. It’s already lost value because I didn’t take advantage of having the label reflect that. Yet,… Read more »

If everyone gets them graded, they might become rare in raw form someday. I sent coins in one time and got 3 -70’s and 2-69’s and the coins looked exactly the same to me. 69’s in general sell for around raw prices. Those were the last ones I sent in. You could have just as easily got a 69. I think grading companies have a purpose. I just don’t think it is modern commems unless there is a concern about fakes. Otherwise it is just splitting hairs. Grading is subjective, so one person’s 69 is another person’s 70 and vice… Read more »

With the SSB Proof coin it will not matter whether it is graded. It is truly a scarce coin in Unc as well. These coins will appreciate in large chunks, and even raw coins will do exceedingly well. It does feel like a few too many choices, but now it feels like some of the lesser mintage coins, namely the Spouse coins, are going to have one stellar price rise when we get to Mrs Kennedy. The mint is doing some truly superior work on the ATB quarters, so they will eventually pull in awards, so long as they put… Read more »

The gold commemoratives have never been in great demand. I have bought and sold a number of them over the years but never made much. Lost money on a few. The number of people that collect the gold commem’s are the problem. A lot of collectors do not even know that they exist so the low issue numbers do not matter much.

RonnieBGood

Hello Collectors, Investors and Hobbyists, I do not have as much time lately as I have had in the past to post here but I hope to share a bit of knowledge from time to time. I have seen posts about raw vs. graded coins and that a raw coin could be rarer (then more valuable) than graded. While in fact that can become the case if many are graded the problem then becomes the value of the coin. A raw coin grade is then truly in the eye of the beholder. When a new issue from the Mint it… Read more »

It would be beneficial to the coin owners and the graders if the graders were required to justify why a coin rated one number over another. Point to the flaw or identify where and therefore why the coin is just missing the next higher score. This would make the scoring more objective and force the graders to be more open.
