Sales of the new products include 100-coin bags of the quarter that are listed at $34.95 and 40-coin rolls that are sold for $18.95.

The quarters found in these two new products are nearly identical to the standard Acadia quarters released into general circulation by the Federal Reserve Banking system on June 11, 2012. The only difference is the inclusion of a ‘S’ mint mark on coins of the newest releases, indicating their minting in San Francisco.

Circulating United States coinage made for commerce is produced at US Mint facilities in either Philadelphia or Denver. As such, these coins bear a ‘P’ or a ‘D’ mint mark.

2012-S Acadia Quarters for Collectors

Circulating coins have not been routinely struck at the San Francisco facility for years, although it is no stranger to America the Beautiful Quarters®. Proof quality America the Beautiful Quarters struck for coin collectors have been minted in San Francisco since their debut in 2010. In that respect, the latest Acadia quarters are not that much different. They too are struck solely for collectors and are originally sold by the Mint directly to the public.

The policy of producing circulating quality quarters was initiated earlier this year. U.S. Mint officials indicated that the new products were seen as desirable addition by collectors.

"We were looking for a new numismatic product with an "S" mark. Feedback we had received from customers was that there was always great anticipation with products that had the "S" mint mark," said U.S. Mint spokesman Michael White.

Released as part of the series before the 2012-S Acadia quarters were San Francisco struck El Yunque quarters and Chaco Culture quarters. The series will continue later this year with Hawaii Volcanoes quarters and Denali quarters. The U.S. Mint has not indicated whether it will continue with such coins beyond this year.

Coin Designs

Shown on the reverse of the Acadia quarter is a design emblematic of Acadia National Park of Maine. It shows a view of Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse set along Acadia’s rough coastline. Reverse inscriptions include ACADIA, MAINE2012 and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The reverse was designed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Associate Designer Barbara Fox and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna.

All America the Beautiful quarters contain the same obverse portrait of George Washington. This image of the first President of the United States was originally designed by John Flanagan and has been featured, with minor variations, on quarter dollars since 1932.

Order Information

2012-S Acadia quarters in circulating quality are available directly from the United States Mint website at http://www.usmint.gov. The Mint has placed no ordering or household limits on these releases.

If the US MINT was looking for a new numismatic product from the San Fransisco mint why didn’t they start their Palladium series this year? I’ve been waiting since it was announced for that series to start.

According to the Palladium Eagle law, proof versions can only be minted at West Point. Bullion and uncirculated versions can be minted elsewhere.
