US Mint Numismatic Gold Coin Prices Positioned to Rise

2012-W $50 Uncirculated American Gold Eagle Coin

The 2012-W $50 Uncirculated American Gold Eagle Coin is among U.S. Mint coins that could rise in price.

There is a good chance that U.S. Mint numismatic gold coin prices will rise Wednesday, based on recent trends of the precious metals within the coins. Prices of collector platinum products, however, are poised to stay the same.

Gold prices on the London Fix have floated above $1,600.00 an ounce every day since Thursday and are averaging near $1,617 an ounce, but the U.S. Mint is using a current price threshold for its collector coins containing gold of between $1,550.00 and $1,599.99 an ounce. So, if tomorrow’s AM Fix is above $1,462.95 an ounce and the PM Fix stays above $1,600, then gold coin prices will go up.

[Update: Gold coin prices were NOT raised Wednesday. Gold prices slid south late Tuesday. The London PM Fix for the precious metal on Wednesday came in at $1,599.00 an ounce, or $1 shy of the threshold that would have triggered higher coin prices.]

Platinum’s average in London is presently around $1,411 an ounce, which is still in the range of $1,350.00 to $1,449.99 an ounce that is being used by the U.S. Mint to set its Proof American Platinum Eagle at $1,692.00. In order for the price of the platinum coin to go higher, the price of the precious metal in London would need to go above $1,760.95 an ounce for the AM Fix and register above $1,449.99 an ounce for the PM Fix.

In short, the likelihood of gold coin prices going up is high but it is extremely unlikely that there will be a change for the Platinum Eagle.

Should prices change, the chart below states the possibilities, per the United States Mint gold coin pricing grid for numismatic and commemorative coins.
