Bullion UpdateGold gave back nearly all of its prior session gains Tuesday as the U.S. dollar rebounded, curbing the appeal of precious metals.

Gold prices for August delivery declined $9.30, or 0.6%, to $1,579.80 an ounce on the Comex in New York. Gold moved between intraday levels of $1,573.00 and $1,602.00.

"Gold was weighed down by liquidation across different sectors as metals, energy and equities are all significantly lower," Reuters quoted Phillip Streible, senior commodities broker at futures brokerage R.J. O’Brien.

U.S. stocks closed sharply lower Tuesday on uncertainty over Europe and corporate earnings fears.

In other New York precious metals futures:

  • Silver prices for September delivery settled down 56.2 cents, or 2.1%, to $26.882 an ounce. The white metal on the day traded between $26.760 and $27.580.

  • Platinum prices for October delivery declined $16.20, or 1.1%, to $1,429.70 an ounce. Platinum ranged from $1,423.00 to $1,454.60.

  • Palladium prices for September delivery settled to $576.60 an ounce, falling $7.30 or 1.3%. Platinum ranged from $573.15 to $588.00.
