Sales of the newly released 2012 U.S. Mint Uncirculated Coin Set started quick last week, but failed to attain the debut levels of prior sets.
Released Monday, May 21, the 2012 Mint Set was the bureau’s best-selling numismatic product of the week with unit sales of 164,459. That equates to nearly $4.6 million as pricing for each is $27.95.
The sales pace was 14.1% slower than the debut of last year’s set. Yet, footnotes should indicate that the 2011 Uncirculated Coin Set launched in a stronger seasonal month for coins and it did not compete with holiday activities like those of this past Memorial Day weekend. Then again, the 2012 set was also $4 cheaper.

When this year’s set is taken off sale next year, it should register as the third or fourth most popular numismatic product of 2012. The Mint has not said how long it will remain available. As some indication, last year’s set is still for sale. Its weekly sales gains are modest at this point, however, with the latest at 424 to 523,675.
This latest set includes 28 uncirculated coins with 14 minted at the U.S. Mint facility in Philadelphia and 14 from the U.S. Mint facility in Denver. It contains two uncirculated versions of all the coins intended for circulation, including these 2012 America the Beautiful Quarters:
- El Yunque National Forest Quarter for Puerto Rico
- Chaco Culture National Historical Park Quarter for New Mexico
- Acadia National Park Quarter for Maine
- Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Quarter for Hawaii
- Denali National Park Quarter for Alaska
Among the $1 coins, the set offers this year’s Native American dollar and the 2012 Presidential dollars depicting:
- Chester A. Arthur
- Grover Cleveland (first term),
- Benjamin Harrison, and
- Grover Cleveland (second term)
