Opening sales performances are in for the 2012 Presidential $1 Coin Uncirculated Set and bags of Chester Arthur Presidential $1 Coins. The latest sales figures from the United States Mint also reveal deepening demand for bullion Gold Eagles.
American Gold Eagle bullion coins are on a fiery pace with 26,000 ounces moved through the first eight days of May. The total is already ahead of last month by 6,000 ounces and above February by 5,000. Sales are tracking to surpass March (62,500 ounces), but remain behind January (127,000 ounces) when the newly 2012-dated coins were first released.
But as strong as Gold Eagles are, companion American Silver Eagles continue to limp along. U.S. Mint distributors ordered 335,000 so far this month. If the current sales pace extends through to the end of May, it would would end as the slowest month since February 2008.
Sales Debut of Numismatic 2012 Presidential $1 Coin Products
Released last Tuesday, May 1, the new Presidential $1 Coin Uncirculated Set debuted with sales of 20,996. It was the top selling numismatic product for the U.S. Mint.
The level appears to be similar to that of last year’s set. A direct comparison is impossible since the Mint uncharacteristically failed to report opening sales for it until a full month after the launch. By that time, 28,111 had been ordered by collectors.
Bags of Chester Arthur Presidential $1 Coins were made available on Monday, April 30. Their debut sales could not have been helped by the earlier (April 5th) release of Arthur $1 rolls and boxes. Buyers grabbed 267 of the bags filled with Philadelphia minted dollars and 222 bags containing dollars struck in Denver.

23 collector products improved over their prior weekly sales as compared to 42 out-performers in the previous sales report. Next week’s report will show spiking unit sales with Monday’s release of the 2012 Proof Set.
