US Mint Sales: American Eagles and 5 Oz Silver Uncirculated Coins Lead

Collector buying activity remained mostly muted for a second straight week, the newest U.S. Mint sales figures show. American Eagles and five ounce silver uncirculated coins were among the few numismatic products to outperform their prior weekly sales.

For the Mint’s biggest coins, America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins advanced 3,563 as a group compared to 2,931 previously. The only five ounce piece to record reduced weekly sales was the newest Vicksburg coin that was issued on January 12. Such slowdowns following the first few weeks of a release are natural. Yet, the coin actually maintained a very solid weekly momentum of 1,688 against the prior 1,752. The other five ounce Olympic, Glacier and Gettysburg silver uncirculated coins each jumped at least 200 over their previous gains. Three of the available four silver coins actually appear on the Mint’s weekly top-seller list.

Overall, 21 U.S. Mint products improved over their prior weekly sales versus the 29 out-performers noted in the previous sales report.

As mentioned, American Eagles stood out as well. The uncirculated American Silver Eagle, appearing second in the U.S. Mint’s best-selling product list, advanced 4,455 versus the prior 3,062. Each of the three proof American Gold Eagle products also saw more action. As group, they rose 438 against 309.

US Mint Sales: Bullion Coins

January tends to be a strong month for American Eagles. Last January was no exception.

Since last week, activity increased across all United States Mint bullion coins. Gaining the most was the American Silver Eagle with a pick-up of 560,000 which put it at 6.107 million for January 2012. The total is the second best ever for a month, falling only and just behind the 6.422 million record set in January 2011.

In a rarity, all sizes of American Gold Eagles advanced. While the grid below shows the number of coins delivered by the Mint to its buyers in January, the total ounces of Gold Eagles came in at 127,000. That was the highest amount since 133,500 ounces were sold in January 2010.
