The collectible Mount Hood National Forest Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin for Oregon sold out Wednesday, January 11. The fifth .999 fine silver coin issued in the U.S. Mint’s America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin series is now the fifth one to sell out.

The United States Mint sent this image of the 2010-P Mount Hood 5 Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin promoting its release on July 28, 2011. It sold out on January 11, 2012

It was the slowest of the debuting five to do so, having been released on July 28, 2011. The latest United States Mint sales figures as of Monday, January 9, had their total 169 away from the authorized 27,000 mintage. The 169 obviously went by Wednesday afternoon as the Mint moved the product page for the Mount Hood coin to the "No Longer Available" section of its website and placed the words "Sold Out" on top of it.

The bulk of the mintage, 14,759, was taken within the first six days of its release. Each coin went for $279.95. Those who waited long enough to make a purchase were fortunate to get one or more at cheaper prices. Due to plummeting silver prices, the U.S. Mint reduced prices two times on the Mount Hood Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin — a $50 cut to $229.95 on October 7 and then a $25 cut to $204.95 on December 27.

Although issued in 2011, the Mount Hood coin is dated 2010 as the Mint did not launch the new collector series until last year. Every five ounce uncirculated coin is minted at the Philadelphia Mint and bears a "P" mint mark. There are also bullion versions intended for investors. While these were struck in Philadelphia as well, they do not carry the "P" mint mark and their finish is a bit different in appearance. Both versions have the same obverse and reverse designs as found on the circulating Mount Hood National Forest America the Beautiful Quarter.

Still available from the U.S. Mint are three 2011-dated five ounce pieces which celebrate Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania, Glacier National Park in Montana and Olympic National Park in Washington. The fourth 2011-dated uncirculated coin launches Thursday, January 12, at noon ET. It honors Vicksburg National Military Park in Mississippi and it will be priced at $204.95. The final 2011 issue depicting Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Oklahoma is scheduled with a release date of February 9. The U.S. Mint has not publicly announced release dates for the five 2012 uncirculated coins.

Glad I got one, they’re much more beautiful in hand than on the computer screen.

Not glad I paid $279.00, I should have waited…..

At a low mintage of only 35,000 each, these 5 ounce coins will be valuable and rare.
