Gold Prices Rise 10.2% for 11th Annual Gain, Silver Falls 9.8%...
Gold futures advanced nearly $26 Friday, rebounding from six straight session losses to close out a roller-coaster year with a gain of 10.2% -- an 11th consecutive annual increase.
Other precious metals rallied as well, chipping away tiny slices from what turned out to be staggering yearly losses. Platinum and palladium were hit hardest in 2011, falling 21.0% and 18.3%, respectively. Silver was hammered 9.8% lower than its close last year.

James Garfield Presidential $1 Dollar Coin Cover Available
The United States Mint placed the James Garfield Presidential Dollar Coin Cover on sale Thursday, December 29, 2011, for a price of $19.95. It is the Mint's final product release for the 2011 calendar year.
It is also the final of four 2011 releases in the American Presidency $1 Coin Cover Series and the twentieth since the covers were introduced for the Presidents in 2007.

After logging six losing sessions that neared 5% and touching important must-not-break support near $1,520 an ounce, gold prices recovered as the final trading session of a quite turbulent year got underway this morning.

US Mint’s 2011-W $10 Proof Gold Eagle Coin Sells Out
Another collectible 2011-W Proof American Gold Eagle coin is no longer available. The United States Mint on Wednesday signaled that the individual $10 Proof Gold Eagle has sold out, marking the second in the series to go following a sellout of the largest $50 version in October.
Both coins remain available within the 2011-W Proof Gold Eagle Four-Coin Set, but the price point is much higher for that collection at $3,400.50. The $10 coin, which contains a quarter-ounce of 22-karat gold, had been priced at $478.00 [...]
Chinese Outlaws of the Marsh Commemorative Coins Released in Third Series
The People's Bank of China has released another series of gold and silver commemorative coins dedicated to the classical Chinese novel known as the Outlaws of the Marsh. The coins feature reverse designs colorized to showcase the famous outlaws and some of the deeds they committed.
The third series of the Outlaws of the Marsh commemorative coins includes three in 99.9% pure gold and four in 99.9% pure silver. All feature extremely limited mintages and are available now through authorized People's Bank of China distributors [...]
Gold Declines 1.5%, Silver Advances 0.3%, US Bullion Coins Stuck
Gold declined 1.5% Thursday, extending a string of losses to six straight sessions. Among factors cited for dragging the yellow metal down were a stronger U.S. dollar and liquidation by funds to grab year-end profits.

Stack's Bowers Galleries will auction the Battle Born Collection, which is only the second complete 111-piece set of Carson City coinage ever assembled. The only other complete set belonged to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., which was sold in three auctions over a 15-year span in 1982, 1996 and 1997.

Prices matter. Bargain-hunters swarmed in to grab numismatic gold coins following their recent price cuts, the latest United States Mint sales figures show. The week that was supposed to be a calm and mostly boring one for gold and other precious metals players turned uglier by the minute as sellers demolished one support level after another and took no prisoners.
