Commemorative silver dollars and $5 gold coins honoring the bicentennial writing of the Star Spangled Banner will be minted in 2012 when President Obama signs the Star Spangled Banner Commemorative Coin Act into law. The legislation, numbered H.R. 2097, calling for the coins passed in the U.S. House of Representatives on September 9, 2009. The [...]
Gold, based on early indications, appears compelled to extend its rally and end above $1200 an ounce on Friday. That would seal 8-days of straight increases — the longest string of gains since November. In the early going, Gold jumped as the dollar fell following weaker-than-expected U.S. jobs numbers. U.S. gold futures for December delivery [...]
U.S. gold prices rose for a seventh straight day on Thursday, but only modestly with a $3.40 increase. The string of wins marks the longest rally this year for gold, with its latest gain brought on, opined analysts, by a weaker dollar. Metals were mixed as a group. Silver rose 0.2 percent, platinum fell 0.9 [...]
The United States Mint finally placed the proof 2010 Boy Scouts of America Centennial Silver Dollar on official “Sold Out” status — weeks (if not months) after many had anticipated the event would occur.

This closes the final chapter on what has been an interesting roller-coaster for the commemorative coins that celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Boy Scouts of America.
The proof coins launched on March 23, 2010, along with their uncirculated counterparts, to overwhelming demand.
In fact, ordering in the first few hours was so intense that the U.S. Mint’s online store and telephone systems experienced significant issues reminiscent of the troubles that occurred during last year’s Lincoln Coin and Chronicles Set release.

United States Mint weekly bullion coin sales slowed as gold and silver prices fell.
And numismatic products dropped in pace without the allure of newly released annual sets pulling collectors into the store — as happened in the prior two weeks when the uncirculated 2010 Mint Set and then the 2010 Proof Set launched.
The two sets remain sales leaders, although weekly increases are falling quickly. The 2010 Mint Uncirculated Set went from its 247,085 debut to 46,321 and then 22,778. The 2010 Proof Set opened at 296,379, with the next seven days adding 54,637.

This week the United States Mint published the opening sales figures for Yosemite National Park Quarters, and with a new month beginning it also released new coin production figures that provided the preliminary 2010-P Yosemite quarter and 2010-D Yosemite quarter mintages.
Bags and rolls of the third coin released in the America the Beautiful Quarters™ Program were launched on Monday, July 26 — the Yosemite quarter ceremonial release occurred on Thursday, July 29. Their opening sales show that collectors purchased just over 2.7 million quarter-dollars between Monday and Sunday.
That is near the level of the prior Yellowstone product debuting numbers and about 377,000 shy of the first Hot Springs sales figures. Yellowstone figures are handicapped slightly as the rolls and bags were released on a Tuesday, giving one day less of availability.
