2010 Proof Platinum American Eagle

The United States Mint today at noon Eastern Time launched the 2010 American Eagle Platinum Proof Coin for the price of $1,892.

The one-ounce .9995 fine platinum coin continues the collector series which launched in 1997, and is the second issue in a new multi-year themed program that explores the six core principles in the preamble of the U.S. Constitution.

The 2010 proof coin has a limited 10,000 worldwide mintage, and is expected to sellout based on demand levels from prior years. Indications support an early burst of orders.

Gold futures prices soared past $1,200 an ounce overnight and maintained momentum in the opening in New York on Thursday after closing the prior day to $1,199.20 an ounce. US Mint Sales Figures Image United States Mint numismatic coin sales edged lower last week, with the recently released 2010 Proof Set and 2010 Mint Set dropping the most but still registering the highest unit sales. U.S. Mint bullion coins continue to sail.

In a mini-milestone, the 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set topped 150,000 following a weekly increase of 5,230. They have a ways to go before passing last year’s silver quarters sets which are still for sale. Those gained 2,018 to 288,124.

The US Mint 2010 Proof Sets are approaching a milestone of their own. They advanced 34,551 and are 14,433 away from hitting 400,000. Not bad considering they were released in the slower summer season, exactly three weeks ago.

The United States Mint will launch the 2010 American Platinum Eagle Proof Coin on Thursday, August 12, 2010.

Platinum Eagle Proof Coin

The release will mark the first Platinum Eagles available from the U.S. Mint since last year’s proof was issued on December 3, 2009. Collectors wasted no time in obtaining those strikes as the entire 8,000 mintage was sold in just over a week.

Several factors undoubtedly played into the fast sell-out and will also likely affect sales of this year’s 2010 proof platinum issue — as well as their later values.
