US Mint Sales: Bullion Coins Sluggish, 2010 Mint Sets Drag

1

US Mint Sales Figures Image The latest round of U.S. Mint sales figures contain the opening proof Platinum Eagle numbers, show a slowing demand for gold and silver bullion coins, and include several flat or negative product adjustments.

Far fewer American Eagle and Buffalo bullion coins were ordered than typical between last Wednesday and Monday. Fractional Gold Eagles remained unchanged, and the 1 oz size and the Buffalo Gold coins each edged only 500 higher. Silver Eagles rose just 75,000 — less than the per day average sold during the first 230 days of this year.

First Spouse Gold Coins advanced 159 as a group compared to the prior 307. Their sales were stunted, pulled down by negative adjustments to the proof (-44) and uncirculated (-42) Abigail Fillmore $10s. A backwards move also occurred with the Franklin Pierce Presidential Coin Covers as they went in the hole 1,241.

While not negative, 2010 Mint Set numbers might as well have been with their weekly pick up of 67. That figure is so low that it has the potential to stand as the smallest increase for the sets until they go off sale in 2011. Coin World reported earlier in the week that plain edge Native American Dollars were found in some sets. It seems logical to assume that they may be in a temporary holding pattern for this reason. They are still on sale, however.

2010 Proof Platinum Eagles are nearing a sellout. Four day sales came in at 8,268 which is 82.7 percent of their maximum 10,000. Demand is stronger than last year’s sets, and the remaining coins should move fast since the Mint lowered their price by $100 Wednesday morning. It would be astonishing if the proof eagles have not sold out by next week.

The following sales tables provide a breakout of the most recent U.S. Mint coin sales figures.

I cant get the fraction coins for gold this year, the demand is there for small 1/10 1/4 eagles at 8-12% above spot as usual. The price is high so people want smaller coins at a time at the 8-12% like the bullion act is called for. Not minting smaller bullion so profit is too much is wrong and leaves the little guy to rot. They should allow for more vendors to compete, the smaller gold would sell if people were aware the cost was set to the public expected the bullion act to insure .I hate 1 ounce coins… Read more »
