US Mint 2010 Product Schedule Changes, Proof Gold and Silver Eagles TBD

0

Mint Coin CalendarThe United States Mint on Tuesday published a new 2010 product schedule that offers collectors a full preview of its remaining releases with specific projected dates.

Up until this point, the U.S. Mint had been providing release dates for two months into the future and then general monthly time lines for other coin issues.

Still notably absent from the schedule are exact dates for the uncirculated and proof 2010 American Gold and Silver Eagles, providing a reminder that they may be canceled for a second year. The 2010 bullion versions (investor-intended, non mint marked) have been available since January 19, 2010. The collector uncirculated and proof 2009-dated eagle were canceled due to the enormous bullion coin demand and the resulting shortage of gold and silver coin blanks.

The schedule does not yet show the three new America the Beautiful Quarters Sets that may be ordered through the Mint’s Online Subscription Program. Three-coin sets, an annual uncirculated coin set and an annual circulating coin set were added to the Mint’s product portfolio in mid-May.

Logically absent are the upcoming America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins. These new 5-ounce, 3-inch diameter .999 fine silver coins are duplicates of the America the Beautiful Quarters. The Mint never lists bullion products on the numismatic schedule since these are not sold directly to the public but instead offered through a small network of authorized purchasers. The five coins are expected to make their debut beginning later this summer.

The Mint has updated the "2010 Scheduled Products Listing" found at http://catalog.usmint.gov/. It also notified the public of the changes in a press release. That release discusses the eagles and provides a glimmer of hope for their 2010 survival. For reference, the Mint announcement is provided below.

*Public Laws 99-61 and 99-185 mandate that the United States Mint mint and issue its American Eagle Silver and Gold Bullion Coins “in quantities sufficient to meet public demand…” There is no corresponding legal requirement to mint and issue the proof and uncirculated coins in quantities sufficient to meet public demand. The bureau, however, is continuing to work with current and potential blank suppliers to increase the supply of silver and gold blanks in amounts that may make it possible to offer the proof and uncirculated versions of American Eagle Silver and Gold Coins in 2010.

The United States Mint, created by Congress in 1792, is the Nation’s sole manufacturer of legal tender coinage. Its primary mission is to produce an adequate volume of circulating coinage for the Nation to conduct its trade and commerce. The United States Mint also produces proof, uncirculated and commemorative coins; Congressional Gold Medals; and silver, gold and platinum bullion coins.

Note: To ensure that all members of the public have fair and equal access to United States Mint products, orders placed prior to the official on-sale dates and times (noon ET), shall not be deemed accepted by the United States Mint and will not be honored.
