US Mint Sales: Silver Dollars Easing, First Spouse Gold Rising

United States Mint commemorative sales are slowing as the days since their launch pass. Weekly gains have fallen by a bit more than half as most coin collectors who wanted them now already own them.

First Spouse Gold Coins, on the other hand, had their own mini surge despite their age.

As far as America’s newest and smallest coin, the 2010 Lincoln cent, the public appears less excited about buying rolls of them as compared to their 2009 counterparts. To the numbers…

2010 Boy Scouts Silver Dollars have scored 290,392 or 83.0 percent of their maximum 350,000 mintage. On sale for just over three weeks, reported gains have declined from 214,672 to 51,844 and now 23,875.

While indicators still seem to support an eventual sell out, the Boy Scouts coins need to find a sustained buying level if that is to occur. Their prices will be raised after 5:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday, April 21. That deadline, however, is only a call to action for those who know about it. As is the case with most commemoratives that are minted for less than a year, only a small slice of a population that would be interested in buying them even know they are available.

2010 Disabled Veterans Silver Dollars reached 191,489 or 54.7 percent of their authorized mintage. On sale for seven weeks, their weekly trends have been dropping by half as well, with the last three gains moving from 14,684, to 7,010 and now 3,427. More than 10,000 have been sold since their prices were increased on March 29.

2010 Lincoln Cent rolls made their debut. Two-roll sets were released Thursday, April 8. As of Sunday, sales came in at 45,483. While strong, they are diminutive when standing next to the initial 2009 penny roll numbers.

The 2009 Lincoln Birthplace Cent had two-roll set sales of 96,000 within two weeks, when the Mint unexpectedly stopped offering them.

Finally, First Spouse Gold Coins enjoyed a better-than-normal week. While the newer 2010 Abigail Fillmore $10s lost a bit of luster, week-over-week gains for the other gold coins improved. As a group, 1,238 more were purchased versus the prior 1,038. Margaret Taylor gold proofs advanced 112, and Letitia Tyler proofs added 104. The last time these two experienced triple digit increases was mid-February for Taylor and mid 2009 for Tyler.
