The Perth Mint of Australia announced on Tuesday the world-wide launch of the second proof issue from its renowned Australian Koala Gold Coin Series, the 2009 Koala Gold Proof Coin.

This year the design features an eye-catching image of a young koala facing out while sitting on a branch eating gum leaves.

Koalas are one the few iconic symbols strongly associated with Australia. They are indigenous only to Australia where they spend most of their life high up in Eucalyptus trees eating leaves. Gold, Silver Rise to Start Week as Dollar Falls

Precious metals climbed on Monday as gold moved above $920 an ounce following weakness in the U.S. dollar. Silver and platinum gained as well, but oil slid to stay below $60 a barrel. U.S. stocks rallied as major indexes marked gains of more than 2 percent.

Bullion update ...In New York trading futures for bullion:

  • Silver for September delivery rose 14 cents, or 1.1 percent, to 12.785 an ounce.

  • Gold for August delivery climbed $10.00, or 1.1 percent, to $922.50 an ounce.

  • October platinum gained $9.70, or 0.9 percent, to $1,117.30 an ounce.

US Government Prints 558 Million Banknotes Worth $17.1 Billion in June

BEP Production FiguresThe US government increased the variety of banknotes but did not print as many in June compared to May, Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) figures released Thursday show.

In comparing the months, while the agency added $10s and $50s to its June production, quantities were limited on top of the fewer $1s, and $20s. The production level of $100s remained unchanged.

558,080,000 banknotes were printed last month valued at $17,128,320,000. In contrast, the BEP printed 620.8 M notes worth $17.3 billion in May. Read the rest of this entry »

2009 Buffalo Gold Bullion Coins to be Minted After All

American Buffalo one-ounce bullion coin2009 American Buffalo Gold Bullion coins will be produced this year, despite earlier reports to the contrary, a United States Mint public notice reveals.

Coin World broke the news in June, reporting that the US Mint would (at some future time) produce only the collector one-ounce, 24 karat Buffalo gold proof coin in 2009, and not the same-designed $50 bullion coin intended for investors.

However, an updated message appearing in the US Mint press room over the weekend reveals a new direction:

 

2009 American Buffalo Gold Bullion Coin Update — Annual production of the United States American Buffalo Gold Bullion Coins is required by law. As a result, the United States Mint is presently developing a production and launch schedule to determine the earliest possible release of these coins through the Authorized Purchaser network.
