The State Bank of Pakistan has announced it will issue a commemorative coin for former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

The central bank said 300,000 coins with a denomination of 10-rupee will be issued on the first anniversary of Benazir Bhutto’s assassination, December 27.

Few details are available for the actual specifications of the coin, or where they will be available. It is known that each will bear a portrait of Bhutto wearing her trademark head scarf and include the Urda inscription: "Daughter of the East — Honourable Benazir Bhutto."

Bhutto was assassinated in a suicide bomb and gun attack in Rawalpindi after an election rally for general election. She had previously served as Pakistan’s first and still only woman Prime Minister, holding the office twice from 1988-1990 and during 1993-1996.

Pakistan, which is now led by her Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), has asked the United Nations to set up an independent panel to probe her killing.

Bhutto’s husband, Asif Ali Zardari, became co-chairman of the PPP, which swept elections in February. He then became president in September after Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf stepped down under threat of impeachment.
