Gold Falls with Oil, Platinum Climbs with Dollar

New York gold futures dropped Thursday along with crude-oil and a near 350-point plunge in the stock market. Platinum climbed 0.7 percent, the dollar showed strength, and silver fell ever so slightly.

Bullion update ... Despite Thursday’s reported decline in crude and gasoline supplies for last week, October oil dropped $1.46 to close to $107.89 per barrel.

December silver dropped just a penny to end at $12.94 an ounce.

October platinum climbed $10 to $1,402.20 an ounce.

December gold fell $5 to close to $803.20 an ounce. It surged earlier in the day to a high of $819.50.

John Quincy Adams Presidential $1 Coin and First Spouse Medal Set Released

John Quincy Adams Presidential $1 Coin and First Spouse Medal Set John Quincy Adam United States Mint Presidential $1 Coin and Louisa Adams First Spouse Medal Sets are now available and priced at $7.95 each.

The set was released Wednesday, September 3, and includes an uncirculated John Quincy Adam Presidential dollar coin and a bronze medal bearing the likeness of the Louisa Adams First Spouse gold coin.

According to the Mint website,

 

The coin and medal are held in a durable plastic card enhanced with beautiful representations of the President and first spouse’s portraits, with issuance information on the back.

Civil Rights Quarter Series Proposed in House

Coin Legislation on Capital BuildingA bill recently introduced by Rep. Melvin Watt [D-NC] proposes a 40-coin, eight-year series of circulating quarters to commemorate and be emblematic of "prominent civil rights leaders and important events that have advanced civil rights in America."

H.R. 6701, "Civil Rights Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008," was introduced July 31, and has an already large cosponsor list of 99 representatives.

Most collectors are now familiar with the H.R. 6184, "America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act of 2008," which the House passed July 9 and would continue circulating quarters commemorating national parks and sites for at least 11 years. Like it, H.R. 6701 would authorize a large silver version of the coin measuring 3 inches in diameter and weighing a 5 ounces.
