U.S. Mint at Denver Closed During DNC Convention

The United States Mint at Denver offers exceptional public tours, but its doors will be shut for Democratic National Convention (DNC) attendees and everyone else during the week of the Democratic convention.

Politics? Not so, according to The Denver Post who quoted U.S. Mint Deputy Director of Public Affairs Greg Hernandez.

The Mint will not be producing coins or tours during the week of the convention (August 25-29) because it will be performing its Annual Physical Inventory (API).

Hernandez said:

“Yes, it does coincide with the DNC being in town, but it was planned long before that.”

An advocacy group will protest at the Mint during the DNC convention, and whether it’s open or not is irrelevant to them. It’s the Mint’s money-making symbolism that’s most important.

Recreate 68 plans to surround the Mint on Aug. 25 at 5 p.m. to "shake the money out of it for the people." The event is entitled Shake Your Money Maker.

The purpose, according to the group’s website, is aimed at reminding people about the cost of the DNC party and how that money could be better spent. Demonstrators are reminded to bring “a sack to put all of your loot in” and are encouraged to bring noise makers, energy, spells, magic, and costumes.

The Mint’s Denver facility was founded in 1863. It manufactures all denominations of circulating coins, coin dies, the Denver "D" portion of the annual uncirculated coin sets and commemorative coins.

Denver Mint tour schedules may be seen and reservations made on the U.S. Mint Tour page.
