PCGS Announces New “Genuine” Service for Coin Collectors and Dealers

The Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) announced Wednesday the immediate launch of a new "Genuine" service for coin collectors and dealers. For the fee of $100 per coin, PCGS will authenticate and encapsulate problem coins — coins that have been cleaned, suffer environmental damage, altered on the surface, major scratches, etc.

It’s important to point out that coin grading is not included in the new service. The main Genuine service features offer:

  • Encasing coins in normal PCGS holders
  • Use of standard PCGS inserts
  • Use of the word “GENUINE” in place of the usual grade
  • Eligibility for inclusion in the PCGS Set Registry (with a grade value of 1)

Coins will enjoy coverage under the PCGS Guarantee of Authenticity. They will not, however, be covered under the PCGS Guaranty of Grade since the service does not offer grading.

In the new service announcement, PCGS also stated they:

reserve the right to reject any coins submitted under the Guarantee Service, including coins that are excessively damaged, altered to such a degree that making a determination of authenticity is difficult or impossible, or which have surface contaminants that may harm the coin in the future.

Customers are told to submit all coins for the Genuine Service on a regular PCGS submission form, marking “GENUINE SERVICE” in the “Other” box.
