Tutankhamun Pyramid Shaped Coin Launched by Isle of Man

The world’s first pyramid shaped coin makes its debut today. The three-sided coin is so uniquely shaped that you wouldn’t carry it around in your pocket.

Isle of Man: World's first pyramid coin

You certainly could, if you didn’t mind the pointed edges poking your thighs. And the new coin is legal tender by the Isle of Man government. However, it’s not meant for general circulation.

It’s a coin great for gifts and for collectors and it’s really designed to commemorative the return of Tutankhamun’s treasures. The celebrated 30 year return is in the ‘Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs’ exhibition at London’s O2 arena.

One side of the pyramid coin bears an image of Tutankhamun while the other has a portrait of Queen Elizabeth. The copper coin’s legal tender value is 25p, and can be purchased directly from the Pobjoy Mint for £12.72. (That’s ~$26. However, at the time of this writing the coin is only available through the UK and International version of the web site.)

The Isle of Man is a self-governing island located in the Irish Sea between England, Scotland and Ireland.

Mr. M

I wonder if we should use something like this in place of the Golden Dollar?

Mike

It sure would spark some interesting discussions!
