Tic-Tock, the Jefferson Spouse Gold Coin Race Begins

1

Jefferson Liberty Spouse Gold Coins, Proof and Uncirculated versions. (United States Mint images.)The blazing rush to order the new Thomas Jefferson’s Liberty Spouse Gold coins begin today at 12:00 noon (ET).

The 1/2-ounce proof and the 1/2-ounce uncirculated coins are both made of .9999-fine, 24-karat gold. Even better, only 20,000 coins of each version will be minted!

Will they sell out? Very Likely! This isn’t the first series in the batch. Back in June, both the Martha Washington and Abigail Adams Spouse versions were said to have sold out within 2 hours.

The U.S. Mint’s phone and web site had to be taking a pounding to dispense 80,000 coins so quickly.

These coins will be different than the previous two presidential spousal coins. Why? Jefferson’s spouse won’t be on them!

Thomas Jefferson was widowed for 19 years when he became President. As such, the obverse (front) of the gold coins won’t bear her image but that of the historical image of Liberty just like she appeared back in Jefferson’s time.

Ouch! That’s some serious history and imagery for the other spousal coins to try and compete against!

The coin’s reverse depicts Thomas Jefferson’s monument. Inscribed on top of it is his epitaph:

"Here was buried Thomas Jefferson, author of the declaration of American independence, of the statute of Virginia for religious freedom and father of the University of Virginia. Born April 2, 1743, O.S. Died July 4, 1826"

These coins are dazzlers in comparison to other mint offerings. Collectors are going to love them. If you’re interested, you better jump on ordering them quickly. Your window of opportunity is likely to be very narrow.

What’s the cost? The proof version is priced at $429.95 and the uncirculated version at $410.95 (plus shipping and handling). Orders are limited to one coin of each version, per household for the first week of sales.

After the first week, the limits will be reevaluated. I suspect there probably won’t be a second week, as the coins will be sold out.

Good luck!
